The IASS Honorary Research Fellowship

2024: Dr Pranav Prakash, of Christ Church, University of Oxford, on “Maithili Chapbooks in a Sanskritized World: The History of Unorthodox Printing in Colonial India”.

2021: Dr Ram Das, University of Bar-Ilan, Israel, for research on “The theology of sacred food found in Vaishnava Sanskrit texts”.

2020: Dr Iris Iran Farkhondeh for her project on “The diachronic study of Sanskrit manuscripts in the Śāradā script”.

2019: Dr Lauren Bausch, Dharma Realm Buddhist University, for her proposal on the “Vedic philosophy of language according to the Brāhmaṇa texts”.

Award Details

  1. Any paying member of the IASS is eligible for the Fellowship.
  2. The member should be a scholar who has received a PhD in Sanskrit or allied studies in the f-five years before the date of the Award.
  3. The Fellowship is for research work to be conducted in South Asia for a period of at least two weeks in any field related to Sanskrit and allied studies.
  4. A written project proposal for the Fellowship should not exceed three hundred words and should be emailed to the IASS address given below. The applicant must describe the project and the way in which the honorarium might be spent, as for example travel, accommodation, tuition, living expenses, purchase of equipment and supplies.
  5. The deadline for the submission of proposals will be 31 December of the year concerned. The Fellowship will be announced by 1 October of the same year (see point 8 below). After two office bearers of the IASS management group have assessed the proposals, the Secretary General of the IASS will announce the winner by 1 February the following year.
  6. The successful applicant would be expected to write a report on the project within 12 months of receiving the honorarium for publication in the IASS newsletter and/ the IASS website.
  7. The fellowship is intended to support the endeavours of emerging scholars and is valued at 1000 Euros.
  8. The IASS will make a general call for the Fellowship through its website and also discussion lists related to South Asia, such as RISA and Indology.
  9. The project must be based/conducted in South Asia.
  10. The Fellowship will be announced annually, providing the IASS budget is able to sustain the expense.
